WIND & STRING ORCHESTRA
WIND & STRING ORCHESTRA is mainly for high school youth. The orchestra plays symphony orchestra music as well as music meant for wind orchestras and string orchestras respectively. Here, you get to take on a bigger responsibility for your section and for how the sections work together. You play different kinds of repertoires and further your knowledge of orchestra work.

Marjolein Vermeeren
Terje Skomedal
Marjolein has a double degree in flute and wind band conducting. She grew up in the southern Netherlands where there is a big tradition in wind band music, and she has worked a lot with youth orchestras. Marjolein is a flutist in the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and has attended Side by Side for several years as an instructor for the older participants. She has been a Side by Side conductor since 2020.
Terje is a violinist from Norway and since 2009 he is the first chair for Violin 2 in Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. He is also the concertmaster in BAGS, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra's ownbaroque ensemble. Terje has led WIND & STRING ORCHESTRA in their string orchestra repertoaire since Side by Side 2022.

Better Your Chances of Getting a Slot
- Apply on time - the regular application period is 28 November–24 January. "First-come, first-served" does not apply and you have the entire period to apply, but don't wait any longer than that! Late application is only for remaining slots
- Choose track according to experience – it's important that all participants have sufficient orchestra/singing experience for the level of the track
- Choose tracks by age - we recommend an age range for each track and although there are exceptions, you have the best chance of getting in if you follow the age recommendation
How to Apply
It is important that you read through our APPLICATION INFO before submitting your application. There you will find out more about how the application process works, what applies in case of cancellation, accommodation, and more. You can also get a better track overview in our track pyramid.
The application is personal. You must be at least 16 years old to apply on your own, otherwise an adult must make the application. All questions in the application form apply to you as a playing participant. The email address will be used primarily for contact and acceptance notification. If you are under 18 years of age, you must also enter the email address of a legal guardian. The acceptance notice will be sent to that address as well. The selection is based on the information you have provided about your orchestra experience and age.
